Black Girls Belong in Fantasy and Sci-fi

"Black Girls Belong in Fantasy and Sci-Fi" is all about initiating and celebrating the presence of black women and girls in fantasy and science fiction.

I have been a fan of science fiction, fantasy, anime, and manga since I was small, and the profound absence of characters that look like me has always bothered me.

Growing up, I thought I was alone as a black girl who loved things like Sailor Moon or Lord of the Rings. I would read fantasy novels and quickly grew sick of the cliched "pale" and "fair-skinned" beauties. I loved elves so much that I wanted to be one, but it's disheartening when all the elves you see are milk-white with long, straight hair. They are always described as the most beautiful, yet none of them have ever been black.

I want to see more like Angel Coulby in BBC's Merlin; I want to read more works like Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone: I want to see more characters like Shuri, Nakia, and Okoye in Black Panther.

BGBFS celebrates Nichelle Nichols as Nyota Uhura, Aaliyah as Queen Akasha, Efi Oladele from Overwatch, Garnet from Steven Universe, and so much more!
